Skin and ear problems in dogs and cats in Melbourne

Itchy skin and sore ears are among the most common reasons pets come in, and the most likely to come back. We look for the cause.

Signs to watch for

A dog licks its front paw on a rug
  • Scratching, licking or chewing at the paws
  • Head shaking, or a smell from the ears
  • Red skin, scabs or hot spots
  • Thin patches of fur

Florida heat and humidity make many of these worse in summer.

Finding the cause

Fleas, allergies, yeast and bacteria are the usual causes. We look deep in the ears with a scope, and may take a quick skin or ear sample to check under the microscope.

A plan for flare-ups

Treatment depends on the cause: ear drops, a medicated shampoo, flea control or allergy medicine. For pets who flare up often, we plan for the next one too. Call us if an ear gets worse during treatment.

Questions about skin and ear problems

Can I clean my dog's ears at home?

Yes, with a cleaner made for pets, and never with cotton swabs deep in the ear. Ask us to show you. If the ear is red or sore, wait until we see it.

Is my pet's itching from food?

Sometimes, but fleas and allergies to things in the air or yard are more common. If we suspect food, we will talk through a strict diet trial of about eight weeks.
